Wasteman #5 – The ‘Realist’

‘I’m just being real’ has recently become one of my most loathed statements to be uttered by the human species. What does it mean? Some people claim it is being honest with yourself even in a situation that would be awkward but as of recently it seems that being ‘real’ is used almost as an excuse for people to NOT do what they are supposed to do.

So why is a realist a wasteman? Some people might not understand what I’m talking about right now so let me give a hypothetical example. Say you were related to someone famous or well established and you are interested in their field of work. Say your cousin was a well established psychologist and you had an opportunity to ask them to help you on a research paper or be part of one of their studies however you decide against this with the reasoning that you are being humble & ‘real’. You’re not being real with yourself, in fact you are being one of the greatest waste of space on the planet.

Being real doesn’t mean you have to stay broke. If anything by refusing to better yourself in life you are being unreal. Perhaps you are trying to stick to a particular stereotype that you feel has been put on your shoulders, or maybe you think that if you leave your area or financial situation that you share with a few of your peers they will pass judgement on you. If this is the case then that’s all the more reason to get up & do something.

Sometimes assuming that being real gets you hated is a false pretence. Its either that the people you were associating yourself with never really supported you & your philosophies or the things you do under the cover of being real are so amazingly stupid that you just people off.

How To Spot Him

if he refuses to step out of the box and do something useful with his life, you probably have a ‘realist’. In case you haven’t noticed I am using the term realist in a sarcastic manner. The qualities of a ‘realist’ are very similar to those of the Ambitionless.

Why I don’t smoke weed… Anymore

Why I don’t smoke weed… Anymore

The miracle plant that is finally becoming legal in certain states of America has been on the forefront of my mind. The arguments that weed is good for you all seem legit, & of course, there are certain health benefits of smoking it. Marijuana is one of the most beneficial plants on the earth, it has a multitude of benefits that many people don’t know about. the main reason it is used for in medicinal purposes is pain control, multiple sclerosis deterioration and to induce appetite while decreasing nausea in chemo patients and people with AIDs. it can be used to treat asthma, has been used for centuries in midwifery to deal with morning sickness and labor pain and studies have actually shown that the brain cells marijuana kills are more often cancerous or precancerous cells that would possibly turn into tumors.

time and time again studies that are out to prove marijuana is the devil are inconclusive or weak and poorly controlled studies. if one just googles benefits of marijuana and studies or research they might find many studies that find that marijuana has little negative effects and often many benefits. if you want to avoid the negative effects, such as lung irritation, you can eat or drink it as long as it is prepared correctly.

Even among the Rastafarians (whether you consider it a religion or not), many Rastas quote directly from passages in the Bible to justify smoking weed:

Genesis 1:11 “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”

Genesis 1:29 “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

Genesis 3:18 “… thou shalt eat the herb of the field.”

Psalms 104:14 “He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man.”

Proverbs 15:17 “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.”

Revelation 22:2 ” the river of life proceeded to flow from the throne of God, and on either side of the bank there was the tree of life, and the leaf from that tree is for the healing of the nations”

Rastas also say that it helps them to meditate, relax, and think clearly. So, with all these reasons to smoke it, why did I decide to stop? Well, this poem was one of the reasons, but then I thought about it more.

The poem basically says this: Tt is a gateway to sin, i.e., side effects such as munchies is equivalent to gluttony.. It makes you greedy.. One of  the lines in the poem is “I am better at feeding you sin than satan is“.
It also says that the we idolise weed. The extent we go to defend it is a lot. Look at all of the above reasons I have given you, the medicinal benefits. But half the people that smoke it don’t really have anything wrong with them. It is now a “thing” to go to the doctors & say you have a mild version of some type of illness to be able to buy weed legally in some of the states of America where it can be bought.

Look at Amsterdam. People usually go there for one of two things. Either to smoke weed or to sleep with prostitutes.. For the most part. How can the main attractions be such sins but people are so blind to see it.

Another thing I’ve noticed is how it makes you feel. Lazy. The bible says this about laziness. Proverbs 13:4 – The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. Apart from the religious reasons, laziness is not good for practical reasons. I’ve noticed from past experiences that after smoking I may not be motivated to do anything for a few hours, and the worst I’ve experienced is a few days, after I have smoked. I just want t0 lie in bed and sleep or watch things for the whole day.

Smoking is not conducive to the type of life I want to live. That is, build a relationship with God and be productive in my student life.

Furthermore, I was doing some research on Rastafarians for my Criminology module and in short, my understanding of it is that: They believe the messiah has already come in the form of a black man, Haile Selassie, the emperor of Ethiopia (1930-1974). Praising any other than God is idolatry. Furthermore, they are selective about what parts of the bible they read and understand as they believe its contents have been altered by the white man in order to keep the black man oppressed. Though this is true, the bible has been altered many times, who are they to chose which parts of the bible they accept and which to reject.

But that’s all I have to say about that. Rant over.

Is our generation ignorant?

Is our generation ignorant?

The answer of course is yes. But why? It’s enough to say that we are ignorant as a generation, but to provide no reasons for it is even worse.

First thing is first. In what way are we ignorant? Personally, I think the worst sense of ignorance is the extent to which we conform. What is conformity? The easiest way for me to describe it is “mindlessly following the crowd, just because”. There are two types of conformity, and our generation is a major culprit in both areas. There is obviously, normal conformity – we just do what every else is doing, without really questioning why we’re doing it. Often, we conform in order to feel part of a group. Most teenagers feel like they need to be part of a group, otherwise they feel like outsiders which can lead to insecurities and in more cases than we often think, can lead to self-harm. The internet is a dangerous thing. Facebook, twitter and Tumblr all allow for us to be connected almost instantaneously & we are bombarded with images & ideas more so than any other generation. The problem is that, with this element of conformity (which is a phenomena shared among ALL human beings not just our generation) combined with the speed of the internet, we often adopt ideas without really thinking about WHY we support such ideas.

A recent example is the Kony 2012 campaign. If you don’t know what it is, I’m not going into it in detail here, you can find plenty about it on youtube. The 30 minute video quickly went viral and millions of teenagers suddenly thought they were social activists. I must admit, I was slyly sucked in by the campaign. I posted the video on facebook, but that was as far as it went. I’m pretty sure people still believe it’s a genuine cause, but since its been launched there has been a lot of criticism and the creator of the video, Jason Russell was arrested for disturbing the peace, allegedly running around naked and masturbating while “under the influence” of something.

Now this is my problem with it. Millions watched the video and obviously, were moved by it’s content .. THEN, they were quick to jump on the bandwagon & donate money to this cause without thinking of the obvious warning signs. The main issue was, for a non-profit company, HOW did they have all this merchandise ready in such a “short” time as they say. If I go into it, this post will be WAY too long so here are 2 videos that will shed some more light on the situation. Ugandan girl gives her reasons why Kony 2012 is a scam and Phoney Kony: Nabil Goes In – more reasons why Kony2012 is bullsh*t

In short, we follow what everyone else is doing without thinking of it ourselves. Then the other type of conformity is the ANTI-conformist. These are the people that go AGAINST everything they see everyone else doing. An example is, if everyone is dyeing they hair blonde, they may dye it black or brown. If they listen to a particular artists, as soon as everyone else jumps on the bandwagon, they stop listening to them. It’s still ignorant behaviour because they are still going against the crowd without valid reason.

Moving on. As I mentioned before, the internet bombards us with images and ideas daily. This leads to two things. ONE. We have so much information available to us now that mastery is hard to achieve. What is mastery? Apparently it’s one of the things humans strive to achieve during life and one of the “keys to happiness” – with so much information it’s hard for us to keep track and our mind is overwhelmed. Many people say that the only times they can think clearly is when they are on the toilet. A peculiar statement, but if you really think about it, it makes sense. This generation are so submerged in the technological movement that we rarely see people outside today unless it’s a rave or something & even there, with mobile internet, its hard to get away. So, sitting on the toilet, we have time to think like that, unless you take your laptop to the toilet, then I don’t know for you o.

The second reason, because there are so many ideas thrown at us so fast we often adopt them then push them to the back of our minds, and although this may seem harmless, these ideas may sprout into seeds which can turn into something bigger.

But there is hope. I know a lot of people who are able to think for themselves. The best way to tackle the ignorance of the generation is to teach children to question their motives and WHY they are doing something. & I don’t mean to question WHY they have to do chores or why their parents tell them to do something. But that’s a whole different subject I don’t even wanna get into.

Yes, the generation is ignorant, but there are a lot of us out there that don’t just mindlessly follow what everyone else is doing & ask the right questions at the right time.
